REFLECTION ON THE DAY OF THE TAHOMA TREE VOLUNTEERISM PROJECT

On the 20th of November the project started at around 8.00 in the morning. It started off with the students assembling and doing warm up. After that, the usherers did a opening speech followed by Dr.Zanariah. Then, one of the landscape staff introduced himself and roughly thought of us the ways to fertilize and put the soil around the trees after cleaning them up.

At around 9.15 am the students had their light breakfast which was provided. Safety was emphasized by giving everyone safety gloves and made sure everyone is in their proper attire. As i am in the logistics and technical team, i still managed to plan my tree with the help of my friend. After that, the replanting process started.

REFLECTION ON THE DISCUSSION FOR THE VOLUNTEERISM PROJECT

Before our class conducted the project, we sat down and had a few meetings and discussions as a preparation for the project. We discussed about the activities for that day and who will be in charge of it.

This is to ensure the project goes well as planned. Each chosen committee members presented their ideas and instructed others about the rules and even asked suggestions about it. This involved everyone's participations.

Below can be seen the final list of the committee members for the volunteerism project 💌

I was the member for the logistics and technical where our team will be responsible for providing the soil and fertilizers to each member for their trees.

This volunteerism project was finalized to be held on the 20th of November 2019 at carpark of FSSK around 7.00 in the morning. This project involves 40 students and 30 tahoma trees to be replanted.

REFLECTION ON THE BOOK I BORROWED FROM CAIS

After the talk, we were asked to go to the CAIS and was encouraged to borrow books. As i am an anthropology and sociology student, i decided to find a book which i can later use it as a revision for one of my subject.

Later on, i found a book entitled  SEXUALITIES IN ANTHROPOLOGY:  A READER which was written by Andrew P. Lyons and Harriet D. Lyons. The reason i choose this book was because it has information related to my Gender, Ethnicity and Class subject.

This summary of this book is it succinct and reveals excerpts from key figures in the history of anthropology abut sexualities, morality, and the family featured. It explains how to society accepts and how some did not accept of the gender identities. They also relate it with their thinking and mindsets. This book also offers insights into the diversity of human social beliefs and practices relating to sexuality in different times and in different cultures around the world.

REFLECTION ON TAHOMA TREE SITE VISIT

tahoma trees at Unimas during the season

After a long discussion, Dr.Zanariah and we decided to take care and replant the tahoma trees at the faculty of social science by putting fertilizers and soil. As these trees will only bloom according to its season, we decided to carry on this volunteerism project earlier, so it will be ready by the time the season comes next year. Tahoma trees often bloom and look alike sakura trees where the flowers makes the surrounding extra beautiful.

We looked around the area and roughly sketched what will be doing to carry on this project. Later on, we formed groups and assigned works to each and everyone. Through out the project, we learned to be more independent, responsible and work in a team.

REFLECTION ON MEETING MY ACADEMIC ADVISOR

This was my very first time I got the opportunity to meet my academic advisor Dr. Sharifah Sophia which happen to be my Sociology lecturer. Honestly, I felt very close to her after that discussion and she helped me in a lot of stuffs. Never knew she is a very understanding, kind, friendly lecturer and im glad I did now.

During the session, Dr. Sharifah helped and advised us in :
a) getting to know our learning styles and how to improve them to revise our subjects.
b) she also asked whether we have any problems in each subject and ways to overcome them.
c) how to handle group assignments like a pro and the need to work in groups
d) involve in more college activities to release stress and gain new experiences.
e) how to manage time between studies and other activities.
f) getting use to this new environment will take some time.
g) ways to find revision notes and how to study consistently and not to stress at the very last minute.
h) a lot of motivation messages.
i) focused on our attendances.

REFLECTION TOWARDS THE FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCE

1. MY ASPIRATION :
My aspiration studying in the FSS (Faculty of social sciences) as a first year student is, I would like to get to know more new people here as this is a very new environment for me who is coming from the peninsular Malaysia. I would also like to know more about people as the faculty itself studies the scientific study of human society and social relationships. Being a student of the anthropology and sociology course, my wish is to get into the dean list and represent the whole faculty one fine day.

2. MY EXPERIENCE :
It has been two months since I got enrolled in this faculty and I can confidently say that I love being in this faculty. Although, some people might not understand what do social science students study about or think it is an inconsequential studies; I would proudly say that all the courses we have in this faculty are far more interesting to study about and these courses will be very helpful in the future working world. I am having a wonderful experience because I love what I study and I am glad I got what I asked for. Moreover, I am waiting to experience more new stuffs here in my upcoming years.

3. ADVANTAGE BEING IN THIS FACULTY :
In my point of view, one of the advantages studying in the faculty of social sciences is we get to think like a social scientist which actually makes our thinking skill a lot more broader and solve many social problems. They have had profound effects on every part of society, which makes us one of the important person in the society. By studying social studies, we are becoming better informed about how societies should be put together. For example, one area of social science is sociology. Social sciences not only help students in gaining analytical and reasoning skills, but also prepare them for multifaceted career. 🔺

REFLECTION FROM THE MENTAL TALK ON 2nd OCTOBER

1. MY OWN MENTAL HEALTH CONDITION:
* My own mental health is currently normal and good whereby i have a good stress management and always seek advice from my family and close friends when i feel like I need to be motivated. I also carry out some useful and fun activities to relax myself from time to time. Other than that, having a good rest and a great mindset helps me having a good and normal mental health. :)

2. MY INPUT FROM THE TALK:
* From the mental talk i learnt that we should not underestimate someone is going through tough mental health conditions. We must let them know that they are not alone and if we can't help them we should not make them feel worst; but bring them to a proper person to help them seek help. I also learnt that we can heal our own mental health when its at the starting phase which is usually stress by our own self. For example, doing meditation, exercising, talk to close people about their problems and so on are one of them. There are also indicators when our stress level increases and gets into the phase of depression. The speaker also said these mental disorders experience many psychological, social, and economic challenge. If these mental illness has not been treated it can lead to suicide and many more worse conditions. Last but not least, if someone you know or even yourself is having difficulties with their mental health, please seek for help; you are not alone.❤️

3. WHAT CAN YOU DO TO IMPROVE ON YOUR MENTAL HEALTH:
* I would like to improve my mental health by reading more positive books which tells great quotes to motivate myself and make myself feel good. I would also like to change my stress as my motivation to work harder and push myself more in a good way to achieve my goals. I want myself to constantly remember that " everything happens for a reason and there is a good reason behind that reason" because i tend to forget it sometimes.
